The return of the Rufous Hummingbird!

While doing some much needed yard work this afternoon, in the much needed sunshine, Michelle and I were loudly buzzed by a (first of season) male Rufous Hummingbird! This is probably the earliest we have seen him. Luckily, we had the camera out in the yard with us so we were ready.

Pictures can not do this little guy justice.

He was the most gorgeous Rufous that we have ever seen.

We are hoping to have many more photo ops with him over the next few months.

WOW...he IS early! But then we don't live in the same parts of the country, do we?

I love those guys, they may be my favs...I dunno. Maybe the Calliopes are. Course, the Black-chins with the beautiful purple chin-straps are awesome. How can someone pick just one? LOL

Love the photos...

What a beautiful bird! It will be another month or more before I see my first hummingbird.

You take terrific photos! I have a pair of rufous that arrived about a week ago. I put out extra feeders, for a total of 3, because my resident Anna's hummers are very upset. The rufous pair and the Anna's are chasing each other all day long, at one point I even heard a small collision, feathers brushing against feathers. These rufous are certainly aggressive little things, and so incredibly beautiful. Their high whirring, trilling sound is a treat after the Anna's shorted out circuit sounds all winter long. (I talk to the Anna's in the winter months --when I put out a feeder on freezing winter mornings for them, I call them and they immediately answer and fly over to enjoy some warm nectar. This past winter's snowstorms worried me a bit, but my Anna's were just fine!) Barbara
