Lesser Goldfinches

We've always has Lesser Goldfinches in the yard. In the spring and summer of last year, they were incredibly thick. Then, old man winter came and we were left with just a few. As recently as the last few days, we have noticed a dramatic upswing in their numbers. Going from sometimes as little as 2-5 a day, then 10-20 and now, 40-50 in the yard. Boy howdy, are they beautiful! Gorgeous birds and we are happy that so many are here. But, we didn't expect them to start coming back so early. We figured spring sometime but not in winter. Maybe it's a fluke and they will leave again. We hope not. As I write this, I am watching them cover the thistle feeders and the ground. A lot of American Goldfinches, too. Some of the females seem to be getting pretty bright.

Found your blog on the web. We're new to backyard birding in Portland and are finding ourselves quite entertained. Any resources you can recommend? For instance, we'd love pictures of the top 10 or 20 birds we'd be likely to see in our backyard, so we can start keeping count. Thanks kindly...
